Lisicki received a wild card from the organizers to qualify for the WTA 500 tournament in the USA.

After her serious knee injury in 2020, the 33-year-old is fighting to return to the top of the world. The Berliner made her comeback last year in Bad Homburg, on the beloved lawn. And only lost there in the quarter-finals against the eventual winner Caroline Garcia. Since then, Lisicki had only played occasionally, and she is currently ranked 307th in the WTA ranking. Most recently, she reached the semi-finals at the ITF tournament in Orlando after qualifying.

The return to Charleston brings fond memories for the former Wimbledon finalist. In 2009 she surprisingly won her first WTA tournament here.

However, the competition is tough: In addition to Lisicki, her compatriots Tamara Korpatsch, Anna-Lena Friedsam and Laura Siegemund are also at the start, as are Viktorija Golubic, Taylor Townsend, Coco Vandeweghe, Kristina Mladenovic and Brenda Fruhvirtova.

The peloton leads Aryna Sabalenka in front of Jessica Pegula, Ons Jabeur and Daria Kasatkina.
