Serena Williams' retirement is imminent. As the 40-year-old recently announced, she will be giving up her racket in the coming weeks. After this announcement, there were not only numerous positive words about the American from active players, as the 23-time individual Grand Slam winner shaped several generations.

One of them was Barbara Schett, who ended her career in 2005. The Austrian commented on "Eurosport" about the decision of her former opponent: "For me she is the best of all time. It was a privilege for me to be able to play in her era."

Schett: "We can thank Serena"

"We can thank Serena for what she has done for the sport, the community and the advancement of tennis," continued Schett. All players were thrilled when Williams first appeared on the courts of this world. "We thought Venus Williams was the best player ever with her power and serve, and Venus said, 'Wait for my little sister.' We couldn't believe it," said Schett.

However, Schett was not surprised by Williams' announcement that she would soon be retiring: "I had already suspected that the US Open would be the place where she would play her last match." She is not afraid for the future of the 40-year-old: "She was very successful in everything she did."
