Serena Williams - Milestones with a small flaw

Serena Williams now has a four-digit match number on her account. The US icon has won almost all of the major anniversaries - just not the most important one.

And so Serena Williams has her 1000th match on the WTA tour behind her. The start on Asche against Nadia Podoroska should of course have turned out differently, the comeback in the second set ultimately remained unrewarded. After the 6: 7 (6) and 5: 7, the career record of 39-year-old Serena stands at 841 wins and 159 defeats.

Now the number 1,000 shows that Serena has been on the professional tour for a very long time, and also very successfully. If you keep losing in round one, you won't get this number of matches. And also loses interest in sport, as Roger Federer noted in a press conference at the US Open 2019. Speaking of Federer: He's pretty much the same age as Serena - and holds 1,515 matches, of which he won 1,242.

Rafael Nadal has a record of 1,017 wins and 207 defeats, Novak Djokovic is also striving for four-digit match victories: Nole has 947 successes and 194 bankruptcies.

Venus with more matches than Serena

Both Nadal and Djokovic are a few years younger than Serena Williams. The fact that the greatest player of the past few years, possibly of all time, is only now cracking the 1,000, also shows how often Serena had to deal with injuries. Then there is the complicated pregnancy with daughter Olympia, which fortunately led to a wonderful small family.

It speaks for the brilliance of the Williams tennis family that Serena is not even number one in terms of match practice: Sister Venus has a total of 1,074 games, of which she has "only" won 814.

If you now look at the individual 100s matches that the WTA has listed in an appreciation of Serena's achievements, it is noticeable that the US icon only lost one comparison of the 100s, but that was probably the most important in the entire series - in the 2011 US Open final against Samantha Stosur (match number 600). The fact that Serena completed her 900th game in 2016 and has therefore needed a good five years for the last 100 underlines once again the fact that even in her career, everything has by far not gone smoothly.
