Against the world number 31. Siegemund didn't get into the match at all, lost her first three service games and gave up the first set in just 33 minutes. In the second round there was little change in the game at first, but then the German got through her own tasks in the fifth and sixth attempts - and shortly afterwards managed her first and only break to make it 3:4. But Paolini defied her opponent's rebellion and converted her fifth match point after 1:45 hours of play.

Despite the quarter-final defeat, Siegemund will return to the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time in around two years next week. So far this season, the German has only made it past the round of 16 on the WTA tour in July at the tournament in Warsaw, where she only failed in the final against French Open winner Iga Swiatek (Poland).

In addition to Siegemund, Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) and Tamara Korpatsch (Hamburg) also competed in Zhengzhou, but neither of them made it past the first round.
