Mandatory break for Halep and Muguruza

Bad news for Simona Halep : The Romanian has been sidelined for three weeks due to a tear in her left thigh. The 30-year-old announced this on Thursday evening. In addition to the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami, in which Halep would have met Daria Saville in the second round, she also missed the event in Charleston and the Billie Jean King Cup duel in Poland.

"When I was training in Miami yesterday, I felt a sharp pain in my left leg. I had been struggling with my thigh since my semifinals in Indian Wells and was hoping it would get better, but I had an MRI done last night, which unfortunately showed a crack," Halep wrote on social media.

She will now do everything to get fit for the clay court season, according to the former world number one. The forced break is doubly bitter for Halep, as she has been in top form again in recent months. The Romanian is currently ninth in the race.

With Garbine Muguruza, another Grand Slam winner is also missing a little longer. The Spaniard will also not play in Miami, Charleston and the Billie Jean King Cup (Netherlands) due to a shoulder injury. The 28-year-old is looking to return to the tour at the clay court event in Madrid, which begins on April 28.
