It was of course - especially from the point of view of the organizers - a very bitter start to the Australian Open 2023. A few hours before local hero Nick Kyrgios should have started the tournament, the Australian announced in a press conference called at short notice that he would not be able to attend the tournament due to injury to be able to start. A meniscus injury, according to Kyrgios at the time, made it impossible to compete.

Now there are first positive signals from the Australian enfant terrible: The 27-year-old shared a photo from the hospital on Monday morning (CET). The message: the operation, it was successful. "I will do everything to get back to my best form," said Kyrgios. Last year, the man from Canberra reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in Wimbledon.

In the run-up to the Australian Open, Kyrgios had already announced that a return to the ATP tour for the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami was likely. At the Australian Open, Kyrgios had set himself high goals, it was an extremely difficult day, Kyrgios explained to the assembled press. In 2022, the 27-year-old won the doubles title in Melbourne alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis.
