19 wins with only nine defeats, at the end still a quarter-finals in Roland Garros: That reads as a balance sheet for the 2020 season from Laura Siegemund's point of view very well. It should also be noted with the current German number two: The fact that the last match in 2020 was actually the one against Petra Kvitova at the French Open does not speak for the tournament design of the WTA. Siegemund decided not to start in Ostrava and Linz, the only two ways to still be actively professional.

Place 50 is in the final bill for the tennis year. And the realization that Laura Siegemund has ended Julia Görges' career. That was not to be expected in the second round in Paris. Siegemund had played an uninspired first set, but then managed to disrupt Görges, winning with 1: 6, 6: 1 and 6: 4.

Siegemund gets two points for Germany

Siegemund didn't have to worry about her start into the season: In Auckland she defeated the aspiring teenager Cori Gauff in three sets, then lost to Serena Williams in the quarter-finals. At the Australian Open it was already over in the second round, but against Karolina Pliskova , one of the favorites. Before the Corona break, Siegemund was quickly active in Indian Wells, where she reached the quarter-finals again. Not to forget: The successful work trip to Florianopolis at the beginning of February, during which Siegemund didn’t let the Brazilians miss it in the first round of the Fed Cup.

The greatest success came in doubles: Siegemund came to the US Open rather out of necessity with Vera Zvonareva from Russia, before that she had tried various partners such as Anna-Lena Friedsam, Yanina Wickmayer, Elena Rybakina or Misaki Doi. With Siegemund and Zvonareva, however, it "clicked" in New York City, which was clear in the quarterfinals at the latest when the two defending champions Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka were thrown out of the tournament in two sets. Siegemund / Zvonareva also mastered the final against Nicole Melichar and Yifan Xu in the minimum time.

Strengths as a setback

The statistics show at the end of the short tennis year 2020 for Laura Siegemund 59 double faults in 17 aces. Seen in this way, it is almost astonishing that Siegemund was still able to win two thirds of their service games. As a setback, she knew how to convince: Siegemund won 37.4 percent of all games in which her opponent served. And used 46.2 percent of their break chances.

All in all, the 2020 season can also be seen financially for Laura Siegemund: The WTA has total prize money of 753,669 US dollars for the 32-year-old.
