"The tournaments in the US had time to prepare for this. I expect the games to come," said Haas before the tennis show tournaments in Berlin started next week (Servus-TV).

"Of course, there are many new corona cases in the US every day, but more are being tested," said Haas, who will return as a player in Berlin. The former world number two had ended his career three years ago and is now director of the Masters tournament of Indian Wells / California.

Haas didn't know why Germany's top player Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) canceled his participation for Berlin at short notice. "I cannot speak for Sascha. I think it is a shame that he is not here. But he has a new coach now and maybe wants to prepare for the tournaments that he planned," Haas conjectured.

Zverev is currently in a test phase with David Ferrer as coach.

Haas, Struff, Görges and Petkovic in action on Monday

In Berlin, Haas will meet the 18-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner in the Steffi Graf Stadium on Monday. "Jannik could be my son," said 42-year-old Haas with a smile about the duel between the generations. Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein / ATP-34.) Is dealing with the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut (ATP-12.).

For women, Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe / WTA-38.) Meets Anastasija Sevastova (WTA-43). "We've known each other for a long time, we've felt like we've played ten times against each other. Basically I'm happy to have matches again," said Görges. Andrea Petkovic (Darmstadt / WTA-87.) Competes with the two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic / WTA-12.).
