The tennis tournament in Rome takes place a week earlier than planned. The tournament starts on September 14th and ends on September 21st, as the organizers announced on Thursday. The reason for the postponement is the cancellation of the Madrid Open, which should have been held during this period.

Due to the corona pandemic, the Italian Open originally planned for May had initially been canceled. Now the clay court tournament falls exactly in the period between the US Open (August 31 to September 13) and the French Open (September 27 to October 11). However, the semi-finalists of the US Open will intervene in Rome on September 16 at the earliest and have a bye in the first round in the Italian capital. However, players flying direct from New York to Italy do not have to worry about a quarantine.

By bringing the tournament forward, nothing stands in the way of the Hamburg European Open - Germany's most traditional tennis tournament is to take place from September 19 to 27, the week prior to the French Open .
