Nine matches against each other in the past five years - that's actually not that much for two players who are consistently among the top ten professionals in the world. On the other hand: After Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev only have a few players in front of them in the ATP world rankings, the chance of a meeting usually only exists in the later rounds. Just like now in New York City, where the two are playing their third final against each other. For the first time Thiem and Zverev were looking for the title in Nice 2016, the German had left a lot of strength on the way to the final, one marathon after the next. Towards the end of the second set, Zverev got a nosebleed, Thiem didn't let anything burn, defended the title he had won the year before against Leonardo Mayer.

Two years later, before the final in Madrid, the signs were again of victory for Thiem, as he had defeated Rafael Nadal in a fantastic tennis match in the semifinals. Zverev was the righteous sausage, the native of Hamburg dictated with his serve, played more aggressively than in probably no other game against Thiem. And denied his buddy the first victory in an ATP Masters 1000 tournament. For Zverev, Madrid was already the third in this category after Rome and Montreal in 2017, Thiem was able to write to Indian Wells for the first time in 2019.

Thiem beat Zverev in London and Melbourne

The two most recent games took place in the semifinals: First in 2019 at the ATP Finals in London. On a surface that, according to Dominic Thiem, is less likely than Alexander Zverev. The very clear result of 7: 5 and 6: 3 in favor of the 27-year-old from Lichtenwörth does not reflect the course of the game, at least in the first set, until an inexplicable smash error by Zverev, the match was extremely balanced.

Like the last reference variable, the semifinals at the Australian Open in early 2020. Thiem lost the first set, then showed great nerves in sets three and four in the tie breaks. But the stakes have never been bigger than on today's Sunday when Thiem and Zverev arrive at Arthur Ashe Stadium at 4 p.m. local time (10 p.m. CEST, live on Eurosport, in Austria on ServusTV and in our live ticker). After all: Dominic Thiem can already fall back on experience in major finals. Even if these were not known to be positive.
