Stefanos Tsitsipas had to say goodbye to the US Open 2022

Defending champion Daniil Medvedev has confidently advanced to the second round of the US Open. The 26-year-old Russian beat American Stefan Kozlov 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 on Monday. On the other hand, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, who lost 0: 6, 1: 6, 6: 3, 5: 7 to the Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan, was surprisingly eliminated. Tsitsipas had to be treated on his right hitting arm during the match, but after winning the third set it looked like the favorites would make a comeback in the first match of the night session at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

"The conditions weren't easy, it's very warm and the humidity is high," said Medvedev after the match that opened play at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday: "I tried to play really solidly and I think that's it I succeeded."

Murray beats Cerundolo

Medvedev, who was not allowed to start in Wimbledon due to sanctions against Russia, is one of the title candidates this year, alongside 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal. Last year, the Moscow native celebrated his greatest success to date with a final win against Novak Djokovic, who was absent this time.

Andy Murray was also able to win in New York in 2012 and now, exactly ten years later, also achieved a convincing opening success. The 35-year-old Brit beat 24th-placed Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 6-3, 6-3. "I played well in the important moments," Murray said with satisfaction.
