Alcaraz was allowed to play against Arthur Ashe Stadium for the second time in a row. And just like at the start against Sebastian Baez, the Spaniard had to deal with a man who feels more comfortable on clay courts: Federico Coria. Alcaraz was the dominant man on the court most of the time, winning 6-2, 6-1 and 7-5. Only in the third act did Coria manage to catch up on a break and get back into the set after a 1:4.

Coria even got five breakballs in the ninth game, Alcaraz fended them all off. And got the decisive break a few minutes later to make it 7:5.

Alcaraz's next opponent will be somewhat surprisingly Jenson Brooksby. The American managed to fend off seven set points in the second set against Cincinnati champion Borna Coric. The spirit of the Croatian was gone, Brooksby finally won 6: 4, 7: 6 (10) and 6: 1.

Sinner wins in three sets

Jannik Sinner also had to stretch himself against Christopher Eubanks in the second round. As on Tuesday, the South Tyrolean played at the Louis Armstrong Stadium, in round one Sinner was only allowed to celebrate against Daniel Altmaier after five sets. In the end, Eubanks was 6: 4, 7: 6 (8) and 6: 2. Sinner plays either Grigor Dimitrov or Brandon Nakashima in round three.

Marin Cilic, 2014 champion in New York City, also won against Albert Ramos-Vinolas in three sets after his smooth win against Maximilian Marterer in round one, this time with 6:3, 7:6 (4) and 6:3.
