The last time Dominic Thiem heard the voice of Master of Ceremonies Gary Sussman in Interview Room 1 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Sussmann greeted the Austrian with "Champ". Dominic Thiem is of course still and forever. In contrast to 2020, the journey of the soon to be 29-year-old at the US Open is over this time after round one.

Pablo Carreno Busta, basically Thiem's favorite opponent on the ATP tour, had made the Austrian a few offers in the sweltering heat on Court 17, which Thiem only partially accepted. Thiem could have won the first set, in the third he made it more exciting than necessary. Round two was one to forget, in the fourth and last a brief inattention was enough to seal Dominic Thiem's fate.

Thiem's game is not consistent enough

And while Serena Williams and Danka Kovinic were about to open the first night session of the year in New York, Thiem took his place on the podium in the 1er and patiently answered the questions of the reporters present. Thiem explained that this was probably the best match since Roland Garros in terms of the intensity and quality of his shots. He could take a lot of positive things from this match.

"The goal was to push Pablo to the limits," Thiem continued. Physically he is in great shape. And he likes the heat with a lot of humidity much more than when it's too dry. “The first set was a reflection of the whole match. There was some really good stuff there, like the forehand in the first game where I broke it. That was the best forehand for a long time.” Even at the end of the first set, which ultimately ended up being lost 5:7, the aggressiveness would have been right – but then the forehand would have been thrown out.
In summary: His game is still not consistent enough. "I have to accept that. And see that I eradicate that.”

The next opportunities to do this will open up in Metz and Tel Aviv.
