US Open 2022: Quartet with difficult prospects

With Maximilian Marterer, a fourth German made it into the main draw of the US Open 2022 on Friday. The chance of deep runs is rather small there.

And then there are four German representatives who will cavort in the 128 grid among the men. Maximilian Marterer completed the quartet on Friday with a 6: 4 and 6: 3 against Riccardo Bonadio, in which the biggest trump card is known to be missing: Alexander Zverev will not play in New York, he is preparing for the Davis Cup in Hamburg. Michael Kohlmann, the German team boss, has come to New York. As does Lars Uebel, the athletic director of the TennisBase in Oberhaching.

Kohlmann and Uebel saw a very concentrated torturer who found the right means in the decisive phases. Bonadio, who has won all four previous matches against the German left-hander, was unable to use three breakballs in the first set to make it 5: 4, then Marterer struck in the following game. In the second act, an early break was enough to clear the entry into the main draw.

No luck for the Germans

Oscar Otte, Daniel Altmaier and Peter Gojowczyk are already waiting. With rather dubious prospects. In his first match after a long injury break, Otte has to play against Hubert Hurkacz, number eight in the US Open 2022. This is unpleasant insofar as the Pole had shown a strong performance just a few weeks ago when he reached the final in Montreal. Otte had just started training again.

Peter Gojowczyk can try Holger Rune. The Dane didn't hit quite as much after moving into the quarter-finals of the French Open, but the task will not be easy for Gojowczyk. Especially since he has to defend a round of 16 from the previous year. Like Oscar Otte, by the way.

And Altmaier? He made an appearance in one of the larger stadiums with Jannik Sinner, but is not guaranteed to be lucky. This also applies to the successful qualifier Maxi Marterer: Because he was assigned as the first playmate Marin Cilic, the champion of 2014 and the current number 15 of the tournament.
