Oscar Otte had to admit defeat to Hubert Hurkacz

As the last hope, Oscar Otte retired on Tuesday (local time). The man from Cologne lost 4: 6, 2: 6, 4: 6 to Poland's Hubert Hurkacz, who was eighth. Under special circumstances, of course. Because for Otte it was the first match after an operation on his knee, since his defeat in Wimbledon against Carlos Alcaraz the second best German player had to sit out.

Previously, last year's round of sixteen Peter Gojowczyk, Daniel Altmaier and Maximilian Marterer were over. Gojowczyk, 33 years old from Munich, lost to Danish top talent Holger Rune on Tuesday in New York 2: 6, 4: 6, 6: 7 (5).

Zverev not at the start

Daniel Altmaier (Kempen) also had to pack his bags after a 7:5, 2:6, 1:6, 6:3, 1:6 defeat against the Italian Jannik Sinner, who was eleventh, as did Maximilian Marterer. Marterer, qualifier from Nuremberg, lost to Marin Cilic, tournament winner from 2014, 3:6, 2:6, 5:7.

The German top player Alexander Zverev had not yet been able to start again at the US Open after his serious ankle injury. Zverev had advanced to the semifinals last year, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. Zverev's comeback is announced for the Davis Cup in Hamburg (September 13th to 18th). Oscar Otte will also be part of the team there.
