At the beginning of the fourth movement, Novak Djokovic resorted to primal scream therapy in the naturally empty Arthur Ashe Stadium: it almost had the impression that the world number one had to keep himself awake, he had played so unfocused, especially in the third round. Djokovic led first with one break, then with two, gave up his service, immediately stole that from opponent Kyle Edmund, and received another break. And still won the set 6: 4.

The 33-year-old Serb deserved a strong verbal sign that he was successful again as a setback in the first game of the fourth act. Edmund also signaled: It's great that you have fought for so long. But now it's good too. It was then: Kyle Edmund was Novak Djokovic's 25th opponent in 2020 who had to congratulate him on his victory. Djokovic has not yet had this experience.

Djokovic loses another tiebreaker

Jan-Lennard Struff will be the next to test Djokovic on Friday, the German number two can fall back on very fresh experience: Only a few times ago the two players have reached the quarter-finals of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament, which has been moved from Cincinnati to New York met, the meeting was rather short, Djokovic won 6-1 and 6-3. At the beginning of the year, Struff and Djokovic had clashed at the Australian Open, when Struff was able to win a set.

Exactly that is already going through as a success against Novak Djokovic these days: not to leave the court without a set profit. If a player has the chance to reach for the victory against the industry leader, then Djokovic can always shift up a gear. Sometimes it doesn't need a primal scream like against Kyle Edmund. At least one thing succeeded: to worsen Djokovic's almost unbelievable tiebreaker record a little: With a 5-7 in the short decision of the first set, Djokovic has already lost two of the last 21 tiebreaks.
