"I tell him that I only see him at 60 percent. He can improve a lot of things. We both know that we have to keep working," said Ferrero after the 6: 4, 2: 6, 7: 6 (7: 1), 6:3 final success in New York against the Norwegian Casper Ruud. Alcaraz is the youngest Grand Slam champion since Rafael Nadal in 2005 and the youngest number one in the world since the ATP ranking was introduced in 1973.

"Once you're number one, it's not over and you stop," added Ferrero. "You have to keep working and playing at a high level in the tournaments to keep winning."

Alcaraz was also determined to keep improving. "I'm going to work hard again after these incredible two weeks," he said. "I'm hungry for more."
