The fact that Roger Federer has just hit a few balls on sand in the academy of his coach Ivan Ljubicic on the Croatian island of Losinj should not hide the fact that the next big tasks of the almost 40-year-old are on hard court: at the end of August they are US Open, Federer was absent there in 2020 due to injury, as was Rafael Nadal , who did not want to do a tournament in the bubble and without a spectator almost twelve months ago. Both legends are on the entry list for the upcoming edition.

Just like defending champion Dominic Thiem, who has been on pause since the tournament in Mallorca due to a wrist injury. Which of course doesn't mean that Thiem will really be able to compete in New York. During the Wimbledon tournament, the Austrian said in an interview with Sky that the US Open could be very close. After all, Thiem has been seen on the training ground again over the past few days.

Novak Djokovic for the Grand Slam

The big topic in New York will of course be Novak Djokovic . The world number one still lacks victory at the US Open to be the first man in the Open Era to win all four majors in one calendar year. After his convincing appearances at Wimbledon, there is no doubt that Djokovic will be the big favorite at the Billie Jean National Tennis Center. The Serb is currently in Tokyo to win Olympic gold for the first time. A success at the Olympics could turn the Grand into a Golden Slam.

Overall, the first 103 players named the ATP world rankings, the last directly qualified player is Lucas Pouille. If there was only one cancellation, Andy Murray, who won the US Open in 2012, would move up. Only one player used his protected ranking for a secure starting place: Philipp Kohlschreiber is number 96 on the entry list.
