At least from an organizational point of view, nothing stands in the way of Daniil Medvedev defending his title at the US Open. Because in contrast to Wimbledon, which does not allow Russian and Belarusian tennis professionals to take part in this year's tournament, Medvedev, Rublev, Sabalenka and Co. are allowed to participate in the last major of the season despite the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.

However, under a neutral flag. And primarily because the players compete as individual athletes.
Because the statement by the US association expressly states: "The USTA, together with the other tennis organizations, supported the ban against the Russian and Belarusian tennis associations through the ITF."

In fact, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) had banned Russia and Belarus from the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup respectively this year. In both competitions, Russia would have started as the defending champion.
