Jürgen Melzer and Edouard Roger-Vasselin have to go straight to the limit

Anyone who is drawn to position two on a tournament table has usually drawn the most difficult task possible: Like Jürgen Melzer and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who will meet Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah at the 2020 US Open on Monday. The two Colombians are going into the race as defending champions, but had not only won in New York City in 2019, but also at Wimbledon before that.

On the other hand, the results of the tournament in New York / Cincinnati have shown that Melzer / Roger-Vasselin basically have a chance: Cabal / Farah had to give up in round one, losing to Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski. Melzer and his French playmate were able to win a round, but lost to Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies in the match tie-break. There won't be that in the second major in 2020. As in all Grand Slam tournaments, the third set is played.

Marach versus Oswald, no Bryans

With Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald, two more Austrians are represented in the tableau - and at least one of the two will also be in the second round of the reduced 32-man field after the direct encounter. Marach at the side of Raven Klassen or Oswald together with his New Zealand partner Marcos Daniell. Marach / Klaasen had defeated Alexander Zverev and Tim Pütz in round one this week, but were inferior to Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Rojer in round two.

The most prominent double of the past few years will no longer be at the start in New York City: Bob and Mike Bryan, five-time champions at the US Open, announced their retirement a few days ago.
