Many who were there will probably have stated afterwards that they had already seen it in his eyes. That they saw in his eyes that Nick Kyrgios is about to do something spectacular, something extraordinary. At the latest, when the Australian turns away a few blinks of an eye with a grin, it is clear: what has just been seen will be discussed for a long time.

Because: In the round of 16 duel of the US Open with Daniil Medvedev, Nick Kyrgios ensured one of the most absurd point wins in recent tennis history. And for his opponent. Because when the 27-year-old had already forced the world number one to make a mistake, the Russian's rescue attempt seemed to fall to the ground in a high arc on his own side of the net, Kyrgios had a completely different idea.

Kyrgios beats Medvedev

The Australian started on the other side of the net and tried to win the rally with a winning shot. With short-term success: Kyrgios pushed the ball onto the field with a smile, but Medvedev understood everything with his first reaction. The world number one pointed meaningfully to the Australian, as if to say: "Here he has lost relatively little."

That's how it is. According to the regulations, this is not allowed. The logical consequence: point for Daniil Medvedev. And not only that: also a really important point win. Instead of a break ball early in the third round, it was suddenly Medvedev's game ball. Which he in turn transformed safely with a serve winner. Ultimately, this should not change much at the end of the match, Kyrgios had the better end in four sets.
