No tweeners, no serves from below: In his second-round game against Benjamin Bonzi at the US Open 2022, Nick Kyrgios had to use his bag of tricks in a completely different way. Because the Frenchman was about to send the match into a fifth set. When the score was 4: 4 in the fourth round, Bonzi had three breakballs in a row, Kyrgios then not only won five points in a row, but also took his opponent's serve one last time.
Final score in the entertaining game at Louis Armstrong Stadium: 7: 6 (3), 6: 4, 4: 6 and 6: 4 for Nick Kyrgios, who now meets John Jeffrey Wolf from the USA. Wolf had surprisingly defeated Roberto Bautista Agut in round one and was also able to assert himself against Alejandro Tabilo on Wednesday.
Isner pulls back, Ruud meets Paul
Parallel to the match between Kyrgios and Bonzi, Tommy Paul was able to assert himself in five sets in a purely American duel with Sebastian Korda. And the surprise conqueror of Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniel Elahi Galan, is still in the running. The Colombian also defeated Jordan Thompson of Australia in five sets.
The tournament is over for John Isner: The local hero had to withdraw from his second-round game against Holger Rune because of an injury. Casper Ruud, on the other hand, won against Tim van Rijthoven 6:7 (4), 6:4, 6:4 and 6:4 and will play against Tommy Paul in round three.
