Two years after his greatest career triumph, Dominic Thiem will compete at the US Open 2022 with a wildcard. The Austrian announced this a few weeks ago, and it was officially confirmed by the USTA on Wednesday. In addition to Thiem, the Americans Sam Querrey, Emilio Nava, JJ Wolf, Ben Shelton and Learner Tien also enjoy a free slot in the 128 grid. As did Frenchman Ugo Humbert and Australian Rinky Hijikata.

Thiem had turned a 0-2 set deficit against Alexander Zverev in the final in 2020, in front of empty ranks at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The now 28-year-old from Lower Austria was unable to defend his title last year due to an injury to his right wrist.

Next week Thiem will serve at the ATP Tour 250 tournament in Winston Salem. He had to cancel the planned start in Cincinnati due to a respiratory infection.
