After a hard fight, Sebastian Ofner is in the second qualifying round of the US Open: The Austrian beat German Yannick Hanfmann 7: 6 (7), 5: 7 and 6: 4 on Wednesday. The 26-year-old needed two hours and 26 minutes to win. He now meets Pavel Kotov.

Things didn't go so well for Gerald Melzer: The 32-year-old was beaten by the Slovak Jozef Kovalik 5:7 and 2:6. Alongside Ofner, Filip Misolic and Dennis Novak , Melzer would have been the fourth Austrian to make it into round two.

In the case of the women, however, it is already clear that the main competition will take place without red-white-red participation. After Julia Grabher and Sinja Kraus on Tuesday, Barbara Haas also suffered a defeat a day later: The 26-year-old lost to Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in the first qualifying round 3:6 and 3:6.
