Andrey Rublev and quarter-finals at Grand Slam tournaments - that hasn't been a success story so far. The Russian played his way into this phase of a major five times, and was always followed by a defeat. On Wednesday, Rublev will get another chance against the winner of the Rafael Nadal-Frances Tiafoe game. It could be the third match in a row against a left-hander.
Because after Rublev was able to defeat Denis Shapovalov in five sets in a high-class third-round match, Cameron Norrie had to pack his bags in the first game on Labor Day at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Rublev, number ninth in the tournament, won 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4 against the Briton, who was two places higher.
Nadal clearly beats Rublev in 2017
There was tension only in the third set: Rublev led 3-2 with a break, Norrie was not happy with his performance and destroyed a racket. And then managed the re-break. Rublev, however, struck again in the ninth game and then served reasonably safely.
Should it actually go against Rafael Nadal, then Rublev does not associate the Spaniard and the US Open with good memories: in 2017 the two also met in the quarterfinals, Nadal won 6: 1, 6: 2 and 6: 2. In the last encounter in Monte-Carlo 2021, Rublev was able to leave the court as the winner against the great Spaniard.
