On the same day that the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid was finally canceled, it is now certain that Rafael Nadal will not defend his title at the US Open. In a press release, USTA announced that seven of the top ten ATP world rankings will start in New York City, led by industry leader Novak Djokovic ahead of Dominic Thiem and last year's finalist Daniil Medvedev. Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas will also start with the second major of the year.

However, Nadal's name is missing from the list of participants, as is that of Roger Federer and Gael Monfils. Fabio Fognini, Stan Wawrinka and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also waived the top European players. Roger Federer's absence had long been clear. The Swiss won't open again until 2021.
