In the end, it was 2:29 hours that Roger Federer and Sumit Nagal spent on the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Then the Swiss had converted his first match ball to 4: 6, 6: 1, 6: 2 and 6: 4. Federer was never really in danger of losing the match, but losing the set alone must be seen as a small warning sign. Especially since the 20-time major winner actually had a good start and quickly led 2-0. After that, however, the favorite made too many simple mistakes. After three victories in the qualification competition, Nagal was also able to record success in his first individual appearance at a Grand Slam tournament.

Federer, however, now tore himself on the belt, increased noticeably and easily got sets two and three. In the end, however, the maestro almost had to do a lap of honor: At the score of 5: 4 and his own serve, Nagal picked up four breakballs before the number three of the tournament prevailed.

In round two, Roger Federer meets Damir Dzumhur on Wednesday, who also won four sets against Elliot Benchetrit. Tournament favorite Novak Djokovic, a possible semi-final opponent Federers, had no problems in his opening match against Roberto Carballes Baena.
