Kim Clijsters has held up the trophy three times at the US Open (2005, 2009, 2010), and Andy Murray also celebrated his first major win at the National Tennis Center in New York City. It was 2012. Reason enough for the USTA to grant the two ex-champions a wildcard for the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, which begins at the end of August. Clijsters had surprisingly made her comeback on the WTA tour at the beginning of the year, Murray has not yet played a competitive match on the ATP tour this season.

The remaining 14 wildcards all went to US players. In the men's category, Ulises Blanch, Maxime Cressy, Sebastian Korda (the son of Petr Korda), Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, Michael Mmoh, Brandon Nakashima and JJ Wolf benefit.

In the women’s category, Usue Arconada, CiCi Bellis, Francesca Di Lorenzo, Caroline Dolehide, Ann Li, Robin Montgomery and Whitney Osuigwe can enjoy a direct ticket to the main draw.
