Alexander Zverev calls on Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday

Alexander Zverev is in the quarter-finals of the US Open 2023. And as in the previous game against Grigor Dimitrov, the German number one's outstanding fitness against Jannik Sinner on Monday evening was also crucial for his fourth success in the fifth meeting with the South Tyrolean. While Sinner struggled with cramps from the beginning of the third set. Zverev didn't let the difficult conditions upset him and won 6:4, 3;6, 6:2, 4:6 and 6:3.

New York City's defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is now waiting in the quarterfinals. Alcaraz had already held his own in three sets against the Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the afternoon. The second quarter-final in the upper half of the table will be a purely Russian affair: Daniil Medvedev will meet Andrey Rublev. Medvedev won against Alex de Minaur in four sets, as did Rublev against Jack Draper.

Sinner plagued by cramps

The first set alone between Zverev and Sinner took well over an hour, despite the smooth result for Zverev. The German was the first to get a break, Sinner was able to equalize at 3:3, but gave up his serve again to make it 4:5. Zverev served with zero and an ace out. In the second sentence the same picture - just the other way around. In the third round everything looked like a certain victory for Alexander Zverev. Because Jannik Sinner was only limping across the court at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, plagued by cramps.

At the beginning of round four, Sinner had several chances for a break. But Zverev resisted. But he still had to give up his serve to make it 4:5. Sinner served - and long after midnight a fifth set suddenly started, which no one had actually expected. Also because Alexander Zverev was already struggling with fatigue.

At the beginning of the deciding set, Zverev managed the break to make it 2-0. And the Olympic champion in Tokyo defended this until the end at 1:39 a.m. local time. At 4:41 hours, Zverev and Sinner also played the longest match of this year's US Open.
