It's not often that Roger Federer doesn't know the majority of the audience is behind him. On Saturday afternoon in the third round of the Wimbledon tournament 2021 there was another game in which the sympathies were at least evenly distributed. Because Federer met Cameron Norrie on Center Court at Wimbledon, the last remaining local hero after the departure of Andy Murray and Dan Evans.

Norrie has already shown strong performances this year, defeating Dominic Thiem in Lyon, on top of that. In the Queen's Club, Norrie was only stopped in the final by Matteo Berrettini. In the first two sets, Federer was enough to break, in the third act, the eight-time Wimbledon winner was close in the eleventh game. But Norrie fended off a 15:40 and passed the pressure on to Federer. And he gave his service to zero to the fun of the fans.

Contested fourth set

From then on, this encounter developed into a lively back and forth. First, Federer grabbed the first break in the fourth set to make it 3: 2, while Norrie countered immediately to make it 3: 3. The audience now positioned themselves well behind the last remaining Briton and created a great atmosphere at Center Court. However, they saw a Roger Federer who, with a score of 4: 4 on a wonderful forehand winner, put in a happy overhead volley and had two break chances.

Although the Brit was able to thwart this, after an unfortunate net-off ball, Federer found another opportunity on the break - and it then fit. The Swiss couldn't take this advantage away. With a sovereign service game, the 39-year-old made the round of 16 perfect. This is now against the Italian Lorenzo Sonego, who made short work of James Duckworth.

Earlier on Saturday afternoon, Queen's Champion Berrettini, one of the favorites, easily made it to the round of 16 against Aljaz Bedene. The Italian will now face Ilya Ivashka. Nick Kyrgios had to give up. The Australian suffered an abdominal muscle injury towards the end of the first set against Félix Auger-Aliassime. And congratulated his opponent with a score of 6: 2 and 1: 6 on reaching the last sixteen. Auger-Aliassime plays either against Alexander Zverev or Taylor Fritz.
