Novak Djokovic remains the king of Wimbledon. The Serbian champion, who last lost a match on the sacred pitch in London in 2017 (then Djokovic had to retire against Tomas Berdych), won his 28th straight match on Sunday afternoon. This time against the final debutant Nick Kyrgios with 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4 and 7: 6 (3).

Djokovic now holds 21 Grand Slam titles - one less than Rafael Nadal, one more than Roger Federer.

Kyrgios, who had entered the final without a fight due to Rafael Nadal's withdrawal, got off to a better start and also took a 3-2 lead with the help of a double fault by Djokovic. After that, the Australian did not allow a comeback. Reversed signs in the second act: Djokovic submitted, Kyrgios failed to take four chances to rebreak to 4: 5.

Kyrgios only had himself to blame for the loss of the third set: when the score was 4: 4, he missed a 40: 0 on his own serve and then messed with his box. Djokovic didn't serve particularly well, but he did lead the set 2-1. After that, Kyrgios recovered and took a 6-5 lead after a service game with tight decisions. Djokovic got into the tie break with a counterpoint. Kyrgios started the quick decision with a double fault, Djokovic returned the advantage with a single fault.

But the defending champion picked up again after that, especially with the quality of his returns. At 5: 1 the sides were changed for the last time. And after a playing time of 3:01 hours, the seventh triumph in Wimbledon was perfect.

For Novak Djokovic, the 2022 Grand Slam season could already be over with this success. Because as of now, entering the USA and thus participating in the US Open requires a full vaccination against the corona virus. That is not the case with Djokovic. For this reason, the man from Belgrade had already missed the Australian Open at the beginning of the year.
