"It was a very solid match. The serve may not have been as good, apart from that there were many positive moments," said Nadal, who reached his seventh Wimbledon quarter-final. "I was close to winning another title here last year. I feel very comfortable on the pitch, that was a good game."

From the start, Sousa had to take great risks to become dangerous to Nadal at all. The 30-year-old, who was the first Portuguese professional to make it into the second week of a Grand Slam, made too many mistakes of his own compared to Nadal.

Nadal, on the other hand, was particularly impressed by the backhand, but kept running around it to put pressure on the forehand. After a little less than two hours, the 82-time tournament winner was the quarter-finalist.

The 18-time Grand Slam winner Nadal can therefore continue to dream of the third Wimbledon title of his career. In the quarterfinals, he meets an American: The winner of the game Sam Querrey against Tennys Sandgren is waiting.

Roberto Bautista Agut beats Benoit Paire

A few moments after Nadal's victory, another Spaniard reached the round of eight. Roberto Bautista Agut prevailed against Benoit Paire in three sets and heads to head on 9-0.

The nine-time ATP tournament winner Bautista Agut has not yet delivered a set in the course of the tournament. He converted five of his nine break chances against Paire, while Paire struck only once with five possibilities. He now meets Guido Pella or Milos Raonic.

David Goffin, however, eliminated the third Spaniard in the round of 16. The Belgian prevailed against Fernando Verdasco with 7: 6 (9), 2: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4.
