Dominic Thiem cancels for Cincinnati too

The North American swing in late summer is a good opportunity every year to top up your points account with a view to the season-closing ATP finals. This year, for the first time in a long time, a few counters for the world rankings (and the race) would also be helpful for the Austrian figurehead Dominic Thiem if the world number six wants to be there for the sixth time in a row at the season finale of the best eight players of the calendar year.

Now the hopes for the Lichtenwörther are solely on the US Open. Unsurprisingly, Thiem had to cancel the ATP Masters 1000 event in Toronto in the middle of the week - a full recovery from his wrist injury would have been simply unrealistic before the tournament in Canada. Now the world number six has also announced that he will not be able to compete in Cincinnati either.

Question mark over the US Open

If Dominic Thiem is still able to recover early until the US Open, then the Lichtenwörther will travel to the event where the 27-year-old celebrated his greatest career success to date. Since his injury at the ATP 250 event in Mallorca, the Austrian had emphasized on many occasions how much it would mean to him to compete in Flushing Meadows.

It would probably be the last exit for Thiem to turn a largely unsuccessful 2021 season into a positive one. The 27-year-old had completely lost the thread after his round of 16 at the Australian Open and failed in the first round at the season highlight in Paris, the French Open.
