Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin had lost the first set to Kirsten Flipkens 5: 7 and was leading in the second round 5: 4. At this score, the Belgian stumbled over an advertising display in front of one of the linesmen while walking back and twisted her ankle. Flipkens had to give up, the US-American, who is in first place, is now in the round of 16. There Kenin meets the Kazakh Yulia Putintseva.
Aryna Sabalenke, who won the last two WTA tournaments of 2020 in Ostrava and Linz, continues to rush from victory to victory. Sabalenka, ranked number four in Abu Dhabi and thus a potential semi-final opponent of Sofia Kenin, won against Ajla Tomljanovic 7: 5 and 6: 4. The next task for the Belarusian is tough: In the round of 16 it is against Ons Jabeur.
