The tennis year 2023 is not even a whole day old - and there have already been two Instant Classics in Adelaide. Among the men, who are holding their first of two 250cc events, Marcus Giron fended off two match points against veteran Richard Gasquet to go 7: 6 (5), 6: 7 (6) and 7: 5 after more than three hours of play to win.
Giron can probably play against Félix Auger-Aliassime if the second seeded Canadian defeats Alexei Popyrin from Australia.
Djokovic for men, Jabeur for women
Meanwhile, the women even compete in tournaments in the 500 category. And Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open winner, will probably remember New Year's Day 2023 for a long time. Because the Canadian was already behind Garbine Muguruza by 0:6 and 2:5. And still made it into the second round with 7:6 (3) and 6:2. For Andreescu it was the third win in the third comparison with Muguruza.
While Novak Djokovic tops the seed list for men ahead of Auger-Aliassime and Daniil Medvedev, for women Ons Jabeur is at the top of the list of favourites. After her comeback victory, Bianca Andreescu is now waiting for the winner of the game between Veronika Kudermetova and Amanda Anisimova.
