Aryna Sabalenka did not have a successful start to the season

Unsuccessful start to the season for Aryna Sabalenka: The number two in the WTA rankings received an opening defeat in the round of 16 against the 21-year-old Slovenian Kaja Juvan at the WTA Tour 500 event in Adelaide after a bye in round one. The lady from Ljubljana, who was in 100th place in the world rankings, ultimately prevailed surprisingly with 7: 6 (6), 6: 1 against the big favorite from Belarus.

Juvan could hardly believe her luck after the 1:29 hour game: "I was a little scared at the beginning because she is so incredible and does so many things really, really well. On the other hand, it's the beginning of the season, it also depends a little bit out of shape, and I really believed I could do it. " Juvan will now face either Anastasia Gasanova (Russia) or Miskai Doi (Japan) in the quarter-finals.

Sakkari fails because of Rogers

The world number six Maria Sakkari has not made a really good start to the 2022 season either. The Greek was able to win her first round game against the Slovak Tamara Zidansek in three sets, but then it ended against the American Shelby Rogers with 6: 7 (5), 6: 2 and 4: 6. For the number 40 in the WTA rankings, Elena Rybankina from Kazakhstan is again up against a seed in the round of the last eight.

The number seven of the Adelaide International 1 defeated the Czech Marie Bouzkova 6: 3, 6: 4 in their round of 16. The world number one Shelby Rogers is still in action today, and she will open her first game of the new season against the young American Coco Gauff.
