A repeat of the title for Ashleigh Barty in Adelaide will not work: In 2020, the Australian had gained self-confidence for the first major of the year in the run-up to the Australian Open, a little more than twelve months later the end came at the first appearance. Against a strong Danielle Collins, Barty lost 3: 6 and 4: 6 after only 62 minutes of play. The American showed comeback qualities in both sets - so she turned a 1: 4 deficit in the second round into the set and match win. It was Collins' first success over a number one in the world.

Cori Gauff , who came into the main field of the WTA Tour 500 event through qualification, is still doing well . Gauff defeated Petra Martic 5: 7, 6: 3 and 6: 4. Things are also going well for the Swiss women in Adelaide: With Jill Teichmann, who defeated Qiang Wang in three sets, and Belinda Bencic , who gave Misaki Doi no chance, two Swiss women are in the quarter-finals.
