Iga Swiatek got off to a successful start in Adelaide

One tournament is still going on in the now longer Australian summer - and that will be played in Adelaide. There, where the three best of the WTA world rankings plus Serena Williams were allowed to go into quarantine. What none of the parties involved did: Serena defeated Simona Halep in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, then lost to the eventual tournament winner Naomi Osaka. Halep and Osaka were also stationed in Adelaide.

However, only Ashleigh Barty returned after the end of the first major of the year. The still world number one leads the field at the WTA Tour 500 event, followed by Belinda Bencic from Switzerland. Barty's first job after a bye will be a real touchstone, Danielle Collins from the USA is waiting for round two.

Iga Swiatek, on the other hand, had to start in fifth place already in round one, defeating the American Madison Brengle with 6: 3 and 6: 4. Cori Gauff, on the other hand, had to fight harder and, like her opponent Jasmine Paolini, had made it into the main field through qualification. Gauff left a match point unused in the second set and finally won 6: 4, 6: 7 (4) and 6: 2.
