The second-seeded Russian made up a 5-1 deficit against Liudmila Samsonova in the first round and fended off a total of seven set points, in the end she won 7: 6 (8), 7: 6 (3).
"If you're 1: 5 behind, you have nothing left to lose and just go for it," said the fifth in the world rankings.
She now meets Marketa Vondrousova, who beat Kaia Kanepi.
Veronika Kudermetova, who didn't give Bianca Andreescu a chance in the end 6: 4, 6: 0, is also on.
Only tomorrow will Ons Jabeur intervene - she is top seeded in Adelaide and meets Sorana Cirstea.
