Eva Lys failed in the first main draw round in Beijing against the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in three sets

Qualifier Eva Lys missed a surprise at the WTA tournament in Beijing. The 21-year-old from Hamburg lost to world number 16. Jelena Ostapenko 6:2, 3:6, 2:6. Lys kept the duel with the former French Open winner open for a long time and only had to admit defeat to the Latvian after 1:56 hours.

Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) is the only German in the second round of the $8.1 million top tournament in the Chinese capital. The 36-year-old had already won her opening game on Saturday against Martina Trevisan (Italy) in two sets and will now face either the former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) or the local hero Zheng Qinwen.

Lys (WTA No. 122) had qualified for the main draw of a WTA tournament in the 1000 category for the first time and fought doggedly to reach the second round. She last achieved that at the US Open. At the end of August, Lys won her first Grand Slam match in New York and moved closer to the top 100 in the world rankings.

Here is the individual tableau from Beijing.
