Angelique Kerber has started the lawn season successfully. After her end in the first round of the French Open, the three-time Grand Slam winner swept the Japanese qualifier Misaki Doi at the comeback of the WTA tournament in Berlin after exactly one hour with 6: 2, 6: 1 from the field.

In the second round, Kerber will meet former world number one Victoria Azarenka (Belarus / No. 7), who had previously eliminated Andrea Petkovic. The 33-year-old, who was in the main field thanks to a wildcard, lost 4: 6, 6: 7 (2) on Hundekehlesee on the unloved surface for her.

"I only won against them once, I have nothing to lose," said Kerber, referring to the match against Azarenka on ServusTV. Her opening win was "liberating", "because Paris did not go as I had hoped. I am very happy to be able to play in front of a German audience again. I missed that very much."

Kerber last German in the field

Kerber managed quick breaks in both sets and used her first match point against Doi. The 33-year-old is the last German in the field. The Dortmund qualifier Jule Niemeier had just missed a surprise on Monday against the world number twelfth Belinda Bencic.

Petkovic has only had three wins in eight WTA tournaments in 2021. At the French Open in Paris, she also failed in the first round against the Czech Karolina Muchova.

In the first match of the day at the Steffi Graf Stadium, the Czech had lost Veronika Kudermetova in three contested sets.
