Former world number one Angelique Kerber missed her official start to the tennis year 2020. At the WTA tournament in Brisbane, the 31-year-old from Kiel lost 6: 7 (5: 7), 6: 7 (4: 7) to the strongly performing 35-year-old Australian Samantha Stosur in the first round. It was Kerber's first loss to the former US Open winner in almost five years.

Before the Australian Open in Melbourne (January 20 to February 2), where Kerber triumphed in 2016, the German number one will open in Adelaide (January 13 to 18). The three-time Grand Slam winner ended the difficult past season early in October and then prepared for the new season with her new coach Dieter Kindlmann.

At the end of last year, Kerber won her first game of the new season at the Honolulu, Hawaii, invitation-only tournament, but did not play the final against Danielle Collins (USA) for unknown reasons.

The end of lap one was also for Anna-Lena Friedsam in Shenzhen / China on Monday. The 25-year-old lost 2: 6, 3: 6 against Belarusian Alexandra Sasnovich.
