Slowly but surely the gap between ITF tournaments and the WTA Tour is closing with the increasing number of WTA Challenger tournaments. This week, the sixth of the women's events, which are all endowed with 125,000 US dollars, is taking place on the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula in Valencia. Austria's number one Julia Grabher (WTA 153), who, like last week in Croatia's Makrska, is in the round of 16, is also there.
At the start of the clay court event, the Vorarlberg native defeated French Carole Monnet (WTA 258) after 1:37 hours 7:5, 6:3. Her opponent in the round of the last 16 players has also already been determined - the 25-year-old from Dornbirn will meet the five-seeded Russian Anastasia Potapova (WTA 78), who defeated her compatriot Oksana Selekhmeteva (WTA 157) in three sets.
