Bencic beat Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals to advance to her first WTA final on clay - albeit on the slightly different US clay. "I'm glad this moment is here. I didn't think it would ever come," said the 25-year-old, relieved. In Charleston, Bencic had a chance at the final before, in 2014, when she reached the semifinals, at just 17 years old.
Is it enough this time for the whole way? Bencic meets Ons Jabeur (WTA No. 10) in the final, who beat Amanda Anisimova 2-6, 6-1 and 6-4.
In a direct comparison between Bencic and Jabeur, the Swiss leads 1-0 - a not very meaningful result: in 2021 the two had played against each other at the tournament in Madrid, Bencic led 7: 6 (2) and 4: 3 when Jabeur gave up the match had to.
The final in Charleston is scheduled for 4 p.m. CEST.
