Angelique Kerber won her opening match at the hard court tournament in Cincinnati / Ohio against the French Open semi-finalist Maria Sakkari from Greece with 6: 2, 6: 2.

Kerber had reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon in early July and failed there because of the eventual winner Ashleigh Barty (Australia). Afterwards, she announced that she would not be participating in the Olympic Games due to the heavy load on the game. The 33-year-old was even discussed as the German flag bearer at the opening ceremony in Tokyo.

In the round of 32 on Wednesday, Kerber will face number four seeded Ukrainian Elena Svitolina, who won the bronze medal in Tokyo.

In addition to Kerber, the seeded players Petra Kvitova, Jennifer Brady and Elise Mertens also won their first round games on Monday. Barbora Krejcikova also had no problems with her opening hurdle.
