WTA Cincinnati: Jessica Pegula defeats Emma Raducanu, also Aryna Sabalenka on

Emma Raducanu's run of success at the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati is over: The reigning US Open winner lost to Jessica Pegula after victories over Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka in a thrilling round of 16 with 5: 7 and 4: 6. The American now meets Caroline Garcia, who in turn defeated Elise Mertens 6: 4 and 7: 5.

With Aryna Sabalenka, the number six of the tournament is also in the quarterfinals. The 24-year-old prevailed against Shelby Rogers 6: 4, 6: 7 (2) and 6: 4 and now has to deal with the Chinese Shuai Zhang in the lower quarter of the tableau.

Tomljanovic follows suit

Meanwhile, Ajla Tomljanovic also bought her ticket for the round of eight. The Australians, who had knocked out world number four Paula Badosa in the previous round , defeated Veronika Kudermetova 3:6, 7:6 (4) and 6:3 after a hard fight. She now plays against Petra Kvitova.

The Czech caused a surprise early in the afternoon (local time) by beating Ons Jabeur. With Iga Swiatek and Anett Kontaveit, the two top seeded players from Cincinnati also had to say goodbye .
