Tennis superstar Naomi Osaka (23) was eliminated in the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Cincinnati. The world number two from Japan was defeated by the Swiss Jil Teichmann 6: 3, 3: 6, 3: 6 and suffered the next setback in the dress rehearsal for the US Open. The Grand Slam tournament at Flushing Meadows begins on August 30th.

"I'm almost glad I lost because it gives me so many things to work on in my game," said Osaka. "I just hope the results come in time for the US Open." The Japanese was also eliminated in the round of 16 at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Belinda Bencic also reached the quarter-finals

Osaka had previously announced that it would donate the prize money it won in Cincinnati to support the earthquake victims in Haiti. "I am happy, but sad that I did not get any further," said Osaka. "But I think I have raised awareness. I am glad that we were able to contribute." The tournament officials said they would top up the sum by 24,200 US dollars.

Meanwhile, Jil Teichmann's compatriot, the newly crowned gold medalist Belinda Bencic, has also made it to the quarter-finals. In the night session, the Swiss benefited from an injury-related task by Karolina Muchova with a score of 7: 5 and 2: 1 for Bencic. The two Swiss women meet in the quarter-finals, only in Tokyo did they win silver together in doubles.

Kerber versus Kvitova

Angelique Kerber was able to continue her great run in Cincinnati in the day session. The German defeated Jelena Osapenko in three sets after the Latvian had won the first round. In the round of the last eight, Kerber now faces Petra Kvitova, who didn't leave Ons Jabeur the slightest chance in the round of 16.

The title favorite in Ohio is undoubtedly the world number one Ash Barty, who dismantled the defending champion Viktoria Azarenka in the round of 16. In the quarter-finals, Barty will meet the French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova. In addition, Paula Badosa and Karolina Pliskova are fighting for a ticket for the semifinals.
