Simona Halep was able to achieve her first match success in three months at the WTA Tour 1000 tournament in Cincinnati

After Simona Halep didn't win a match last week on her comeback in Montreal, the Romanian has now won her first match on the women's tour at the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati since the beginning of May. The two-time Grand Slam winner defeated Polish Magda Linette 6: 4, 3: 6, 6: 1 after 2:10 hours of play at the start of the highly endowed hard court event in the US state of Ohio.

The former world number one, who had been thrown out of the top ten of the WTA rankings a week ago after more than seven years, sustained an injury in her left calf before the French Open in Paris and was unable to participate in the tournament for practically three months . The next challenge could be a few steps more difficult, as Camila Giorgi, the tournament winner from Montreal, could wait. The Italian meets the American Jessica Pegula tonight (CEST).

Rain delays the matches

Also ahead are the Czech Karolina Muchova and the American Bernarda Pera. While the world rankings 23. from Olomouc was able to prevail 3: 6, 7: 6 (5) and 6: 2 against former world number four Johanna Konta from Great Britain, the 83rd-place native Croatian made her opponent Rebecca Peterson from Sweden, who was 30 places better, with her 6: 4, 6: 1 off. Due to repeated rain, many games could not be played as planned.
