Whoever wins the title in Indian Wells and thus qualifies for the WTA Finals, their demands have increased massively within a very short time. And the first results of 2022 have shown that Paula Badosa can definitely live up to these claims. In Sydney, the Spaniard won the title in an epic final against Barobora Krejcikova, at the Australian Open it was over in the round of 16 against a great Madison Keys.
The first real setback of the year came for Badosa in Dubai. The current number five in the world lost 3: 6, 7: 5 and 4: 6 to Gabriela Ruse from Romania. Also eliminated is Victoria Azarenka , who lost to Veronika Kudermetova 3:6 and 4:6.
There was a sense of achievement for Elina Svitolina, who was able to assert herself against Mayer Sherif with 6:2 and 6.3. And Jelena Ostapenko also got off to a good start in the traditional WTA Tour 500 event in Dubai. The 2017 French Open winner gave Sofia Kenin, who won the Australian Open in 2020, no chance at 6: 1 and 6: 2.
Aryna Sabalenka is seeded at number one in Dubai. World number one and Australian Open winner Ashleigh Barty will not start. Danielle Collins, still in the final of the first major of the year, had to give up in her first round game against Marketa Vondrousova with a score of 6:2 and 0:3.
