The 25-year-old prevailed against Czech Marie Bouzkova in the final of the hard court tournament in Monterrey, Mexico, after exactly three hours of play 7: 5, 4: 6, 6: 4. For the number one seeded Svitolina, it was the 14th title win overall.

"Marie fought great and I think it was a top class match," said the winner after the marathon. "We both played well, we fought, there were no easy wins. And people pushed us to do our best. The support from the Mexican crowd was fantastic."

Svitolina makes up two places

The year 2020 had not started well for Svitolina. At the Australian Open, the 25-year-old failed in round three to Garbine Muguruza, most recently in Dubai (against Amanda Anisimova) and in Doha (against Jennifer Brady), the end came in the opening match. With the success in Mexico, Svitolina improved again in the WTA world rankings by two places, is currently in fifth place.

The only German starter in the main draw of Monterrey was Tatjana Maria, who lost to Briton Johanna Konta in the round of 16. Konta failed in the semi-final against Bouzkova. Returnee Kim Clijsters, on the other hand, had failed on lap one due to Konta.
